Press text on "Waxworks" "The Berlinale Classics series will celebrate its opening on February 21, 2020 at the Friedrichstadt-Palast with a screening of the 1924 silent film classic Waxworks (dir: Paul Leni). Accompanied by new music from the Ensemble Musikfabrik from North Rhine-Westphalia, with Swiss-Australian conductor Elena Schwarz at the podium, this digital restoration under the aegis of the Deutsche Kinemathek and Cineteca di Bologna will be shown onscreen for the first time at the 70th Berlin International Film Festival. “Waxworks represents a high point and, at the same time, almost the conclusion of expressionist film. Fantastically playful sets, created by Paul Leni, for a story that fluctuates between reality and hallucination, with Emil Jannings attacking his role with gusto, Conrad Veidt spreading dark horror, and the uncanny Werner Krauß pursues the upright Wilhelm Dieterle. It is simply incomparable”, says Rainer Rother, head of the Retrospective section and artistic director of the Deutsche Kinemathek.

The new music for the film, commissioned by broadcasters ZDF/ARTE, combines five acoustic instruments (clarinet, trombone, viola, guitar, percussion) with two keyboards and live electronics, in order to illuminate Waxworks in all its arabesque richness. Just as the film unifies many facets of arthouse and genre cinema, the music by Bernd Schultheis, Olav Lervik, and Jan Kohl treads a fine line between new music and film music, between folk and pop. The composers have created a teasing interplay of musical forms and colours that is as intelligent as it is entertaining.

No original German version of Waxworks survived. The digital restoration used nitrate prints of the English, French, and Czech language versions, as well as additional elements drawn from them. For the cooperative project of the Deutsche Kinemathek and Cineteca di Bologna, L’Immagine Ritrovata digitised the film in 4K resolution and restored it in 2K. The colour concept, as well as the English title cards are based on a tinted and toned nitrate print from the British Film Institute (BFI) that served as the primary element for the restoration. The digital restoration was funded by the German Commission for Culture and the Media (BKM). The world premiere of the digitally restored version in Berlin is a cooperative venture between the Berlin International Film Festival, the Deutsche Kinemathek, and public broadcaster ZDF in cooperation with ARTE. The film will have its TV premiere on ARTE on Monday, February 24, 2020; the Blu-ray/DVD will be released at the same time by absolut Medien."

Programme text of In search for the true illusory island 2012 an expedition set off into the Coral Sea north-east of Australia in search of Sandy Island. This island - found in atlases, maps and Google Maps - is ... a phantom island. Which doesn't mean, of course, that it doesn't exist. Of course it doesn't.
I am drawn to these islands and the confused, abstruse and highly improbable reports about them. I like to wander there in my thoughts, making room in my head for what cannot be cannot be located.
These non-places arise from the captains' thirst for recognition, greed and juggler's cunning, longing and inner homelessness. They set sail to discover unknown regions and do not want to return without without success. Am I just describing adventurers and impostors, or am I also describing myself as a composer? I write the first four bars of a new piece and realise that I haven't the faintest idea what to do next. In my panic, I work out the four meagre bars down to the last detail. I go into the depths instead of continuing.
Soon doubt sets in - are the resulting bars as good as their elaboration? So I poke around in the fog for days in search of the tiniest idea - and then, suddenly, the haze clears and land is finally found. Haze clears and land is finally in sight - or are appearances deceptive? With the installation "In search of the true illusory island", I create a walk-in space for these musicalised webs of fear, ambition and creative joy. I want to lure the audience into this beautiful, weird illusion until they realise that it's all real ...
Italian Trulli Scenographer Linda Vollenweider Linda Vollenweider, born in Zurich in 1991, has loved playing and watching theatre from an early age. She was on stage in school theatres for years and later became involved in the theatre club at the Schauspielhaus Zurich. After completing a four-year apprenticeship as a goldsmith, she wanted to get to know theatre in more detail and founded the 'Jungthaeter' association with friends in 2013, where she is still active today, gaining experience in various areas (production, scenography, costume, theatre, association board). gaining experience. Over time, she realised that she wanted to combine her craft skills with theatre and so she moved completely behind the scenes. She began 2013 as a theatre sculptor at Zurich Opera House and completed a stage design internship at Schauspielhaus Zurich. She has been studying scenography at the zhdk since 2016 and is intensively with the big concept of 'space'. Alongside this, she continues to work as a theatre sculptor and implements independent theatre and art projects, such as her installation 'Wall of Light', which was displayed at the YoungART Brig exhibition in March 2018.
